Ford Falcon XR6 Turbo car review
- Vital Stats
The Ford Falcon XR6 Turbo is like your friendly neighbourhood superhero - unassuming family car on the weekdays, but come the weekend, you can open up that turbo engine and really have some fun.
Style & drive
The five-seater Ford Falcon comes in six different spec levels - XT, G6, G6E, G6E Turbo, XR6 and XR6 Turbo. After loading our toddler and baby in the back, we strapped ourselves in behind the wheel of the XR6 Turbo prepared for an exciting ride, unsure if the super-charged engine was really the right fit for a lady with a baby or two.
The XR6 Turbo boasts a 4.0-litre DOHC DI-VCT Turbo I6 engine paired with a six-speed automatic transmission, and although that might sound a bit too fast and furious, it really wasn't at all. Yes, the powerful gas guzzler (12.4L / 100km) can roar if you put pedal to the metal, but it turned out to be a great car for everyday city driving too.
The interior of the car is old-school Ford - the design being practical but unexciting for the most part, with big buttons on the centre stack and easy-access buttons on the steering wheel. We're not sure if it was just the times of day we were driving, but the eight-inch infotainment touch screen always seemed to be reflecting the light, making it hard to see the display during the day.
The XR6 Turbo comes standard with 18-inch alloy wheels, a four-way power driver's seat, leather-trim seats, a prestige audio system with a six-speaker stereo, iPod/MP3/USB connectivity and Bluetooth. It also has cruise control, automatic headlights, single-zone automatic climate control, and a sports leather-wrapped steering wheel.
The seats are comfortable and there's lots of room both in front and in the rear. A rear-facing car seat can be installed with little or no impact on the front passenger's leg room.
The XR6 doesn't have the best turning circle, but rear vision is good, and the rear parking sensors make parallel parking quite easy. The boot is nice and roomy, and will easily fit a pram and a full load of groceries.
A reversing camera is optional on the XR6 Turbo as part of the Luxury Pack ($4500) that also includes satellite navigation, 19-inch alloy wheels, leather trim inserts, premium audio system, and duel-zone climate control.
The Ford Falcon received a five-star rating from ANCAP. It has six airbags including driver airbag, passenger airbag, front seat side thorax airbags and side curtain airbags. Active safety systems include Dynamic Stability Control (DSC) incorporating Anti-lock Brake System (ABS), Traction Control System (TCS), Electronic Brake-Force Distribution (EBD), and Emergency Brake Assist (EBA). Parking sensors and a driver fatigue warning system come standard on all models.
The Ford Falcon XR6 Turbo auto has a fuel consumption of 12.4L/100km, and a CO2 emission of 292g/km.

Describe the car in three words
Fast, solid, dated.
What are the best things about this car?
The engine is pretty powerful, which makes for a fun ride.
And the downside?
The interior needs a facelift. No ISOFIX hooks for easy car seat installation.
What does it run on?
We did. The Falcon XR6 Turbo is a solid, all-around performer.
If personified, who would this car be?
Ryan Reynolds - vanilla with a dusting of chocolate sprinkles.
