Jeep Wrangler X Unlimited
- Vital Stats
$47,000 - $52,000
The Jeep Wrangler X Unlimited
The Big Banana. The Yellow Submarine. The Minion Mobile. Just a few of the endearing nick-names the kids and I called our Jeep Wrangler X Unlimited for the test drive period.
There's no losing this model in the car park at Westfield - this baby is a massive hulk of a car. I'm talking big, loud and well … yellow. Very yellow. What would people think?
Style and Drive
After hoisting myself up (this car is definitely not for short girls) I felt like I was getting behind the wheel of a big, yellow school bus.
The drive was shaky at first and a little on the rough side, but this had nothing to do with the car. You see, initially I lost my driving mojo through the sheer intimidation and terror of taming this bad boy. The steering seemed too light for a vehicle so heavy and I was initially nervous to drive it.
Somewhat like Cher in the 90's classic Clueless (flash back, she was in fact driving a Jeep!);
I felt I was about to side swipe everything I passed in the traffic. "Oops, my bad".
As Cher so eloquently put it, I initially "felt an overwhelming sense of ickiness" when driving the Wranger X Unlimited. But once I got a handle on the feel of this little ray of sunshine, I actually enjoyed driving it.
I threw my gear in the back and drove up the coast. I basked in its sunny disposition with my top down. I even drove through McDonalds and ordered an Angus burger with fries, goddamit. I grew to love this car and to heck what anyone else thought. I discovered another dimension to myself I never knew existed.
And then, just as I was really starting to enjoy myself, I had to hand it back. And so the whirl-wind love affair was over before it even began.
Sold with your choice of either two or four doors, the Wrangler X is in essence a down-to-earth off roader at heart and the interior reflects it with floor matts made of all weather rubber and lots of hard plastics included upfront.
Having said that, there are a number of comfy touches including black leather and vinyl trimmed and heated front seats, a black leather steering wheel, a 6.5 inch display and UConnect infotainment system with satellite navigation, reversing camera, 40gb music storage and a DVD player.
The interior is large with a high ceiling and there's loads of room - the rear seat folds flat for extra cargo space, and the 4-door Unlimited models offer plenty of rear-seat room for three people.
Powered by a 3.6 litre petrol V6 engine, the drive is as hard as it is fast. The engine is thirsty using 11.3l/100 kms. The Wrangler X comes with18-inch alloy wheels and a hard-top that you can take off to feel the wind in your hair on sunny days.
The Wrangler X earned a four-star ANCAP rating. Of note, there are only airbags up front.
